Since the Cupertino-based company first launched the Apple Watch in September 2014, there have been no significant design changes. It seems the company feels it has nothing to change, but my sources say otherwise. Let me tell you.
As most of you know by now, Apple was planning to release a redesigned Apple Watch Series 7 with flat edges and a flat display. But, unfortunately, the company had to keep the old form factor for another year due to mass production issues.
The only reason for the increased screen size is that Apple had already prepared the panels for the redesigned model and millions of “41mm” or “45mm” engraved straps and other accessories.
Apple engineers worked day and night to resolve these issues and avoid shipping delays, but they were unable to do so in time.
If you recall from the September event of last year, the company didn’t give any details on the Apple Watch Series 7 release date; we had to wait until October to buy a new one, and the stock was minimal.
So what about the 8 series?
Apple is working on three different models this time. The Apple Watch Series 8, a new Apple Watch SE and a Sports Edition.
If you remember, I shared some renders with you that showed what I thought was the 8-series design. ‘Apple to release a new SE model makes me a little suspicious. I will let you know if I get more information on this.
So far, I haven’t heard anything about a complete overhaul, although some sources say the Sports Edition will focus on a more extreme type of user. Therefore, it will use different materials and have a different design to make it harder to break.
I don’t know if that means it won’t look like anything we’ve seen before or, conversely, it will look like an 8-series with added protections and different materials. I’m trying to get photos of prototypes Apple is working on, so stay tuned.
Finally, I want to say that according to some people familiar with the matter, Apple is planning a complete redesign of at least one of the three models that will be released in 2022. Since there are no plans to release an Apple Watch SE in 2023 , it will be either the Sports version or the regular 9 series.
