The Pixel Watch could arrive in May — can it challenge the Apple Watch?

The latest rumors surrounding Google’s highly anticipated Pixel Watch indicated that it was finally on track for release this year, but nothing more specific than that.

A new leaker claim Jon Prosser claims the Pixel Watch will arrive on May 26, which he says is the first time a specific date has been set for the wearable (via Engadget).

Prosser’s reliability is reasonably solid. It was both the first to spotlight the Pixel Watch and subsequent reports have served to back up reports that it first surfaced in 2021. However, as with any leak, this should be taken with a grain of salt as he does not identify sources and, even assuming his information is currently accurate, plans may change.

With that out of the way, that certainly seems like a likely announcement date for the Pixel Watch as it lines up with potential Google I/O 2022 dates. Although we saw the event drop earlier in May in recent years it has been held May 28-29, 2015.

Last year was a big one for Wear OS due to Google announcing a partnership with Samsung during Google I/O 2021. While we’ve yet to see this partnership pay dividends to other makers of Wear OS, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic essentially quintupled Wear OS market share year over year, reaching 17.3% in Q3 2021 from 3.2% in Q3 2020, according to Search for counterpoint.

The Pixel Watch’s design looks compelling, sporting a nearly bezel-less circular body with a single digital crown similar to the Apple Watch, but it certainly takes more to compete. Rumors of a Tensor chip powering it are also encouraging, Snapdragon options remain uninspiring from a performance and battery life standpoint. Google’s ownership of Fitbit should help it with fitness tracking, but we don’t yet know exactly what that will look like either.

We’ve desperately needed more competition in the smartwatch market for years, so let’s hope Wear OS can keep the momentum going in 2022. Maybe the Pixel Watch will be just the device to get things going.
